Game 1: Dallas Stars vs. Devils, 10/8/10

The Matchup: The Dallas Stars (0-0-0) face off against the New Jersey Devils (0-0-0). It will be the first game for both teams this season.

Last Season’s Matchup: The Stars and Devils faced off twice last season, with the teams splitting the series, 1-1. The Stars won the first game, 5-3, in Dallas. Tom Waddell scored the game-winner to snap a 3-3 tie in the third period. The Devils took the second game, 4-0, at home on January 5. Patrik Elias scored two goals, and Martin Brodeur stopped 28 shots for the win.

Tonight’s Matchup: The Stars enter tonight’s game missing two cornerstones of the franchise. Mike Modano signed a one-year contract with the Red Wings after the Stars decided to let him go. Marty Turco also was free to sign with another team, and inked a deal with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Devils will want to come out strong and play aggressive hockey. During training camp, all we heard was coach John MacLean and the team speak about puck possession and smart play throughout all three zones. We heard about a quicker breakout to get the offense started. The Devils did these things during the preseason, but that was against teams that weren’t full strength. Tonight will be their first true test, and we’ll see how the Devils respond.

By the way, the Devils are 12-1-5 in home openers. Brodeur, who will start his 16th consecutive opener, is 9-4-2 all-time on opening night.

Game time is 7 p.m., and you can catch all the action on MSGPlus or 660 WFAN.
