Devils Player Preview – Mark Fraser

In the next few weeks, The Devils’ Den will preview each player on the Devils roster, giving last season’s stats and what we believe the player can do this season. To kick things off, we take a look at a young defenseman, Mark Fraser.

Fraser finally found a home with the Devils last season, spending 61 games on the NHL roster. The former third round pick of the Devils, Fraser spent three years playing with the Devils’ AHL affiliates in Albany and Lowell. He did have a brief callup in 2007, playing in seven games. He made the team out of training camp last season, contributing in a big way after the injury to Paul Martin. Fraser scored three goals, a career high, including his first career goal against Pittsburgh on October 24. Fraser won’t ever be an offensive defenseman, but he did record two of his three goals against the Penguins.

There were times last year when Fraser made some rookie mistakes, but he was a solid blue line player for the Devils. He brings size (6’3″, 220 lbs) and toughness to the blue line. As we saw last year, Fraser isn’t easily intimidated, and he’s not afraid to deliver a hit and get in the corners. Fraser may not become a stud defenseman this year, but I’d expect him to be a solid second or third pairing defenseman and give the Devils quality minutes on the ice.
