Pat Burns Report False
An earlier report stating that ex-Devils coach Pat Burns died today from lung cancer are incorrect.
CTV in Ottawa, which first broke the story, retracted its statement, saying it received “erroneous information” and has “nothing to report about his medical condition at this time.”
Burns coached the Devils to their second Stanley Cup championship during the 2002-2003 season, his first championship as a coach. The three-time Jack Adams winner stepped down after the 2003-2004 season, when he found out he had colon cancer. A year later, he was diagnosed with liver cancer.
After stepping down, Burns joined the Devils as a special assignment scout.
Reports yesterday said the former coach returned to his home in Magog, Quebec to be with his family.
Devils’ general manager Lou Lamoriello spoke to Burns yesterday, and said the former coach is “fighting this like anybody would fight it.”
