BREAKING NEWS – Devils Re-Sign Ilya Kovalchuk

Several NHL reporters, including Tm Gulitti, are reporting that the Devils will re-sign unrestricted free agent left-winger Ilya Kovalchuk.

Terms of the deal have not been disclosed. The team has announced a press conference for 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.

Kovalchuk, traded to the Devils on February 2, tallied 10 goals and 17 assists in 27 games for New Jersey. He also added two goals and four assists in five playoff games.

“Ilya’s excited to be continuing his career with New Jersey and knows first-hand the team’s dedication and commitment to winning,” Kovalchuk’s agent, Jay Grossman, said in a release posted on his agency’s website after announcing the signing.

Last Friday, the Los Angeles Kings seemed to be the frontrunner to sign the left-winger. Kovalchuk visited Los Angeles, and it seemed both sides were attempting to finish a deal. Clearly something couldn’t get done, which left the Devils as the only possible NHL suitor for his services.

Update (1:03 p.m.) – Gulitti referenced a report from Russian hockey writer Dmitry Chesnokov that Kovalchuk’s deal is worth more than $100 million and is spread over 17 years. There is still no conformation on whether the report is true or not, but apparently Kovalchuk’s mother confirmed the length of the deal is correct.

Update (4:00 p.m.) – Dmitry Chesnokov of Puck Daddy is reporting the Kovalchuk deal to be 17 years, $102 million. Kovalchuk will earn $10 million in the first eight years of the deal, and then $7.5 million the next two years. The remaining $7 million will be spread over the next seven years.
