William Paterson University Looks To Win First Collegiate Hockey Title In New Jersey

Here’s some interesting college hockey news to read before the Devils – Sharks game tonight.

The Pioneers (24-8-1-1) clinched their second straight trip to the American Hockey College Association (ACHA) national championship tournament. William Paterson enters the tournament as the number one seed of the Northeast Region. The top two seeds in each region earn an automatic berth to Nationals.

After not making the playoffs in 34 years, the Pioneers have now appeared in three straight playoff appearances. Last year, the team went 0-3 in the playoffs, with a loss to eventual national champions Davenport University.

A college hockey team from New Jersey has never won a national championship at any level.

The Pioneers clinched their second straight Super East Collegiate Hockey League (SECHL) regular-season crown this season. The team is led by goaltender Chris Bauer, who led the nation with 19 wins. The freshman goaltender also ranks third in the Nation in minutes played with 1,528, and has a posted a 3.85 goals against average.

The team will play in the SECHL tournament March 6-8. They ACHA tournament begins March 17 and runs until March 20 in Simsbury, Connecticut.
