Live Blog: Richards goal gives Flyers 3-2 lead in the third period, Salmela OK after leaving on stretcher

Mike Richards powerplay goal in the third period gave the Flyers the lead, 3-2, in the third period of tonight’s game at the Wachovia Center.

With Parise in the box for high sticking, Kimmo Timonen held the puck behind the Devils goal. He sent a pass to the front of the net, where Richards lifted a backhand past the glove of Brodeur for his 23rd goal of the year.

The Devils updated the condition of Salmela. The team said Salmela is up and walking around the Devils dressing room, and I don’t think we’ll see him come back in this game.

The Flyers scored two goals in the last 1:36 of the second period to tie the game.

Carter scored 1:12 after van Riemsdyk to tie the score. After a shot deflected off of Flyers goalie Michael Leighton’s pads, Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger sent a pass to left winger Scott Hartnell. Hartnell broke in the zone on a 2-on-1 with Jeff Carter. After drawing both Brodeur and Mike Mottau toward him, Hartnell threaded a pass cross-ice to Carter. Carter tapped home the puck for his 23rd goal of the year.

After falling behind, 2-0, Flyers rookie James van Riemsdyk cut the deficit in half with his 13th goal of the season. After receiving a pass at center ice from Claude Giroux, van Riemsdyk skated into the Devils zone. He let a shot go from the left circle that went through the legs of Greene and beat goalie Martin Brodeur blocker side for the goal.

Right after that hit, Flyers center Jeff Carter hit Salmela high in the head. Salmela spun to the ice, with his head and neck taking the brunt of the impact. After that, Salmela slid to a stop and lay motionless on the ice. The Devils and Flyers training staff attended to him, and within five minutes Salmela was placed on a stretcher and skated off the ice. He appeared to be moving and conscious.

The Devils extended their lead to two goals on a shorthanded goal 1:01 in the second period. With Andy Greene in the box for tripping, Travis Zajac and Anssi Salmela broke out of the zone on a 2-on-2. Zajac passed the puck to Salmela in the neutral zone, and Salmela carried the puck into the Flyers zone. Salmela worked his way around Mike Richards and drove to the front of the net. He beat Flyers goalie Michael Leighton high to the stick side for the goal, his first as a Devil.

The Devils opened the scoring with a powerplay goal seven minutes into the first period. Devils left winger Zach Parise set up on the goal line and attempted to pass the puck to Patrick Elias. The puck deflected off the skate of Chris Pronger and went into the goal for Parise’s 26th goal of the year.
