With the injury bug making its way around the Devils locker room, the team continuously needed to dip into its Lowell affiliate for healthy bodies.
Two of their newest additions, rookies Vladmir Zharkov and Matt Halischik, earned praise for their play in Saturday’s 6-1 win against the Islanders.
Zharkov didn’t end up on the scoresheet, but he did record five shots on net – tied with Zach Parise for second on the team – and made several defensive plays.
Tom Guilitti of the Bergen Record quoted Devils coach Jacques Lemaire as saying “He played very good. He’s a strong skater, good with the puck. He sees the ice well. He’s going to play. He’s going to be a player.”
Halischuk also played a great game. He hit three posts and even had a nice opportunity on a short breakaway in the second period. He consistently made plays in the offensive zone, and his play elevated the total play of his line.
Overall, the line of Zharkov – Halischuk and Dean McAmmond played a solid game. They were the energy line for the team in their matchup, pinning the Islanders down in their zone and creating quality scoring chances. It will be exciting to see if the two can continue to produce for the Devils while they have their chance.
