Live Game Blog: Elias’ second goal of the game extends Devils lead over the Isles, 6-1, in third period (11/28/09)

Elias’ second goal of the game at 19:15 upped the Devils lead to 6-1 over the Islanders at the Prudential Center.

After a turnover at center ice, Elias skated the puck into the zone and ripped a wrist shot past the right pad of Biron for his second goal of the game.

Elias and Rolston both finished with a four point night (2 G, 2 A).

Rolston’s second goal of the game at 12:32 upped the Devils lead to 5-1. Mike Mottau’s shot deflected off Mark Streit and came to Rolston, who fired the puck into an open net for his eighth goal of the season. Rolston also has two assist in the game.

After having no points on the season, Mottau now has two in this game (1 G, 1 A).

Parise’s goal at 11:54 upped the Devils lead to 4-1. Greene put a shot on net, and Parise took three wacks a the rebound, and the third one trickled in off of Biron’s skate for the goal.

That extends Parise’s scoring streak to 10 games. The Devils record is 15 games, set by Brian Gionta.

Patrick Elias tallied a 5-on-3 powerplay goal to extend the Devils lead to, 3-1 earlier in the period.

The powerplay unit once again put pressure on the Isles penalty kill, leading to the Elias goal. Devils center Travis Zajac fed the puck from below the goal line back to Rolston at the point. After faking a slap shot, Rolston fed the puck to Elias, who was near the faceoff dot in the right circle, for a one-time shot. The puck beat Biron over the left shoulder for the goal.

Elias has a goal and two assists in the game.

There were a few tense moments in the Devils third penalty-kill of the night (5:06), but they were able to kill it off and keep the Islanders PP scoreless.

The Devils are going on a 5-on-3 PP opportunity for 1:50 at 10:30 in the period. The Devils are 1-for-8 on these opportunities this season.

Yesterday, the Isles killed off a 55 second 5-on-3 against the Penguins, which was seen to be the turning point of the game.

Right winger Brian Rolston’s PP goal at 12:06 in the second period put the Devils ahead, 2-1.

Rolston’s goal came from solid work by the Devils’ PP unit. Jamie Langenbrunner faked a shot from the point, instead passing it to Patrick Elias below the goal line. Elias passed the puck to a wide-open Rolston in front, who put the shot off Biron’s left pad for his seventh goal of the season.

The Devils outshot the Isles, 16-12, in the second period. The Devils lead the overall shot totals, 26-19.

Rookie right winger Matt Halischuk should probably have three goals tonight, but hasn’t been able to find the net. With 44 seconds left in the second period, Halischuk deflected a point shot from Greene past Biron, and it was originally signaled a goal. In the official review, however, the referee’s disallowed the goal after seeing the puck bounce off the post and come back out.

The Devils continue to get the better scoring chances this period, but haven’t been able to cash in. At 8:17 in the period, Devils defenseman Andy Greene ripped a shot from point that Langenbrunner deflected. The puck got behind Biron, but the hit the post and rolled away.

After putting up his arms to celebrate, Langenbrunner had to skate quickly off the ice to complete a line change.

The Devils have had the better opportunities this period, the most recent coming on a short breakaway by Halischuk. Halischuk took a puck from the blue line and brought it alone. He shot the puck glove side, but Biron got a piece of his glove on it and the puck went back to the sideboards.

Mike Mottau scored 54 seconds into the second period to tie the game at one. Mottau carried the puck behind the net and threw it in front, where it bounced of the skate of Islanders defenseman Mark Streit and under the pad of Biron for the goal.

The goal is Mottau’s first point of the year.

The Devils almost took the lead shortly after the Mottau goal.  Zharkov took a shot from just above the right circle that was kicked away by Biron. The puck came right to Dean McAmmond, who wristed a shot off the post. The puck ended up on Biron’s shoulder, and the puck fell behind him as he went down to the ice.

The Devils are currently outshooting the Isles, 4-0, in the second period (14:56).

Richard Park gave the Isles the lead on a first period goal. Park carried the puck in on the rush and let go a wrist shot from the right circle that deflected off the stick of Devils defenseman Mark Fraser and went over Martin Brodeur’s shoulder.

The goal was Park’s second of the year.

The Devils had a chance to take an early lead, but they could not put the puck home. Rookie winger Matt Halischuk received a bouncing puck from behind the net and had an open net, but hit the left post. Vladmir Zharkov had a second opportunity, but he shot into the chest of Isles goalie Martin Biron.
